Tampopo’s Thailand Taste Tour

Wow, that’s a lot of Ts in a title.

For those of you who don’t know, Gabs and I are both big fans of Tampopo’s Taste Tours (and just of Tampopo’s food in general, tbf). It’s an amazing opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and try different dishes, and it’s usually pretty good bang for your buck. We always end up finding a new favourite (like when we went to that vegan taste tour and found out how much we like sticky tofu).

I’m not here to tell you all about every single dish we tried, but to highlight my top picks from their Thailand Taste Tour, and also share a dish that I’d definitely skip if I were you.

Our favourites

There were two dishes that stood out the most to both of us, and I’m definitely ordering them on the next opportunity I have and that’s their Thai Salad with coconut prawns, and the Thai curry noodles.

The first one I didn’t think I’d enjoy because I’m not really a fan of coconut, but Tampopo made it work for my pickiness somehow and managed to get the most delicious crispy texture filled with lots of flavour, specially when you dipped these prawns in the sweet chilli sauce that came with the dish. I’d say this is the perfect small plate to start your meal. Two thumbs up!

The latter was another unexpected big hit. The curry was so incredibly rich and delicious, I couldn’t get enough of it (I even wished I had a bit more, but that’s a great excuse to go back!). I quite enjoyed the mix of textures given by the creaminess of the curry, the regular noodles and then the crispy noodles you see pictured above. This dish is definitely different from my usual pick (Tonkotsu ramen, anyone?) but it was absolutely worth getting out of my comfort zone to have it.

My least favourite

Tampopo, I love you and your food, and I know you always have something for everyone but I have yet to meet someone that could enjoy the Pad Krapow with pork belly and rice. This dish was so incredibly spicy, even Gabs (who is an avid spicy food eater) was struggling to finish his plate.

I love a bit of spice every once in a while, and I can appreciate it when this brings flavour to the dish, just like it happens with the Thai curry noodles. However, this food was so hot, it made my mouth just numb.

I’m sure there’s someone out there that must enjoy this level of spiciness, but I needed to warn others like me just in case you get excited by the pork belly.

Other than that, we had a really nice meal and I certainly cannot wait to do this again.
