I know it took me way too long to actually try Northern Soul, but now that they’ve opened a restaurant by Piccadilly Station (which is less than 5 minutes away from our current flat) I thought it was the perfect excuse to actually get ourselves there and decide if these sandwiches are worth melting for.
I can’t start without noting the fact that their prices surprised me in the best way possible. We had two massive grilled cheese sandwiches, a big bowl of mac and cheese and two drinks and it was all under £20. I know this could be considered ‘fast food’ because it’s not a proper restaurant setting but it was less than what I expected (and makes me want to go back soon, too!).
The grilled cheese
Gabs’ pick is pictured left, and mine is pictured right. We both agreed that mine was our favourite (we exchanged halves, as usual) but they were both very very good, so it was a though decision to make.
Feel the heat is a 3 cheese blend with fire salsa and chilli heatwave doritos. Because of the name, I thought this was going to be too spicy for me, and I don’t know if it’s the cheese blend or the fact that my tolerance to spicy food is increasing, but I actually enjoyed the combination of fillings in this bad boy. The doritos gave it a delicious (and very unique) crunch and the salsa prevented the sandwich of being a bit too ‘carb-focused’ (which was my concern purely because I didn’t want it to be too dry).
My pick, on the other hand, had torched goats cheese, thyme, fig and caramelised onion chutney, additional to their characteristic 3 cheese blend. The combo of sweet and salty never disappoints me, and the filling-to-bread ratio was absolutely perfect. I could definitely have this grilled cheese over and over again, and never get tired of it.
Another thing I need to say is that these are actually bigger than I thought, so it’s a good choice for lunch (Friday treat, anyone?).
The mac and cheese
Apart from serving amazing grilled cheese sandwiches, Northern Soul also has a good selection of mac and cheese options that you can have as a main or, if you’re greedy like us, share as a side to your pile of carbs.
Gabs said that this is “the tastiest mac and cheese” he has tried in Manchester and I agree it was pretty bomb. I’m not sure if it was better than Mac Daddies, because I think the latter is a bit cheesier, whereas Northern Soul’s is more about the creaminess.
It’s definitely a matter of preference, but it surely makes it to the top of the list.
Overall, we had a fantastic experience at Northern Soul last Saturday. The staff was incredibly nice and friendly, the food was delivered in less than 10 minutes, and everything we tried was as delicious as you’d expect from looking at those cheesy shots.
Now I want to know your side of the story, have you been to Northern Soul? If so, what’s your favourite grilled cheese? I might have to go to their other location to see if they have a different menu with even more cheesy picks.
Thank you so much for reading me, and make sure to check my Instagram for some delicious Instagram stories 😉 I’ll be back next week covering some very yummy dishes.
