My favourite place in Portland St: Leaf

This is one of those gems that are hiding in plain sight, at least to me. I walk past this place quite often, and because it’s quite close to my workplace, I’ve always been tempted to pay them a visit for lunchtime. Well, we finally did!

Lunch at Leaf in Portland St

Loaded hummus, with pomegranate, onion, cucumber, rapeseed oil, smoked paprika, and toasted ciabatta on the side

We didn’t go during the week (at least for the first time) so, as it usually happens when we go somewhere for lunch on the weekends, we were starving when we arrived. I don’t know why, but we only leave the house when we’re hungry, so by the time we have decided where to go and walked there, we’re already hangry and almost killing each other.

Consequently, we ordered a lot of food, but I don’t regret it for a second.

We first started with some loaded hummus and a delicious serving of caramelised chorizo. I wouldn’t be able to tell you which one was my favourite, as they were both so delicious in their own way!

The hummus was fab, specially because of the textures that the chopped veggies and pomegranate seeds brought to the table, and the chorizo was insanely good thanks to the honey it was cooked in.

I’d say it depends on if you’re looking for something savoury or sweet. I, personally, would recommend either (or both!).

Pan fried gnocchi, with oyster mushroom, kale and gorgonzola.

Gabs decided to go for these pan fried gnocchi, and they were amazing. Because of the cooking method, the gnocchi had an atypical texture and an added flavour that I just loved so much. The oyster mushroom gave the whole dish a lot of flavour, and the gorgonzola made all his cheese dreams come true.

My other half was happy with his dish, so that means I was happy too. Thumbs up!

Crab and prawn fettuccini, with basil pesto, cherry tomatoes and pecorino cheese.

This time, I decided to go for something different, so I ordered their incredibly popular fettuccini (at least among the servers!).

The crab was so delicious, and the prawn combined with the cherry tomatoes and the pesto, was everything I love in one pasta dish. Every mouthful had a refreshing and summery taste, I just couldn’t get enough of it!

If you’re in for a treat, I’d recommend either, as they were both delightful. One thing you need to do is leave room for dessert, though, because their brownies are out of this world.

They have these regular brownies, as well as vegan alternative (which I haven’t tried but I’ve heard it’s quite good from one of my colleagues at work).

They have the richest chocolate flavour, without being too sweet, and the most amazing texture, with a soft but densely packed filling. Words are not enough to tell you how much I love this, so you’ll have to go and try them yourself!

Overall, we had a beautiful experience at Leaf. Their staff was nice, the food was amazing, and I loved the whole vibe. I already went back for lunch and enjoyed their ginormous halloumi sandwich with guac and tomatoes, so if you’re in town, it’s a good option too 😉
